my bio

I was born in Albany, New York.  My family is wealthy and is in the timber industry. My father’s name is Henry Sage and my older sister’s name is Anne Sage. Even when I was young two of my favorite hobbies were to write and draw.  My first real painting class was at Corcoran Art School in Washington D.C. in1919 to 1920. Years later I also studied art in Rome for many years, I learned conventional technique and styles. In Rome I really enjoyed painting outdoors with teacher Oronato Carlandi and fellow students “those were the best days of my life” But then in around 1923 I met an Italian Nobleman, Prince Ranieri di San Faustino in Rome. We married on March 30 1925, but ten years later we separated. I also had second husband after the divorce, Tanguy who was also an artiste me though, he was I little more well known at the time, we married in 1940. My marriage with Tanguy was certainly not the happiest days of my life. Tanguy on many occasions verbally assaulted me and also sometimes physically, he would push and sometimes I would threaten me with a knife. He did not like my paintings and felt jealous of fame that had come to me.  Though in 1955 after Tanguy died I did little are and until one day, I saw some surrealism art and became very inspired and I began painting. One day I was so unhappy that I attempted suicide by taking an over dose of sleeping pills, though I did not succeed in killing myself, then August 1961 I wrote in my journal “ I have said all that I have to say. There is nothing left for me to do but scream”.  On January 8 1963 I took a gun and shot a bullet through my head.
